In this evolving landscape, they are seeking a banking lawyer to assist the team in ensuring legal integrity, mitigating risks, and providing strategic counsel to support innovation while safeguarding regulatory compliance.
Your new role
As legal counsel, you will offer practical and well-reasoned legal advice to the Bank on all regulatory matters that impact its operations. You will play a crucial role in mitigating legal risks, protecting the Bank’s interests, upholding its reputation, supporting business objectives, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
Key responsibilities include:
Legal Advice: Provide pragmatic regulatory guidance to the Bank, identifying and mitigating legal risks in consumer lending and financial products. Review incidents for potential legal breaches and assess regulatory reporting requirements. Manage legal proceedings with external counsel as needed.
Compliance: Ensure product terms and promotional materials comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards. Assist in preparing breach reports and regulatory updates on significant incidents affecting the Bank or its members.
Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with key business stakeholders to provide strategic legal support. Maintain relationships with external counsel while overseeing legal costs to ensure efficiency and quality outcomes.
What you'll need to succeed
Admitted to practice as a lawyer in Australia
Ideally a minimum of 3 years PAE with a focus on retail banking
Experience gained at a mid/top tier firm or financial institution
In-depth knowledge of retail banking laws and regulatory frameworks shaping the industry
Strong legal problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with non-lawyers and apply strategic thinking to drive outcomes
Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills, including the ability to efficiently prioritise tasks—both internal and those managed by external legal counsel—while meeting deadlines
Desired Experience:
Familiarity with breach reporting requirements under the Corporations Act 2001 and the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009
Experience engaging with ASIC, APRA, or other regulatory bodies
