Job Description:

The Opportunity:

The Families and Safety Branch works with First Nations stakeholders and across all governments on justice, gender equality, ending gender-based violence and family and child safety issues.
 

We are looking for people with strong analytical, stakeholder management and writing skills who want to work on policy and program reforms that are critical to achieving better life outcomes for many First Nations Australians.
 

The branch works flexibly, with team members located across Australia. The role does require some Canberra hours and travel to Canberra, for example during Parliamentary sitting weeks.
 

The role requires working with material that can be emotionally impactful or challenging. The agency offers a range psychological safety supports for individuals and teams.
 

The policy and/or program officer (APS 5) will have the opportunity to influence others, contribute to policy design and implementation, and gain the skills to engage in genuine partnership with a variety of stakeholders. 
 

A variety of work will be undertaken including but not limited to:

•           interpreting and drafting policy and/or program documents for review by senior staff in the team

•           contributing to development of policy and/or program documents for review and publication

•           providing advice on policy and/or program areas

•           liaising with internal and external stakeholders and representing the work area in relation to policy development and/or program management.
 

The Senior Policy and/or Program Officer (APS 6) will work closely with First Nations stakeholders, influence others (internally and externally), contribute to policy design and program implementation and gain the skills to engage in genuine partnership with a variety of stakeholders. 
 

A variety of work will be undertaken including but not limited to: 

•           interpreting, drafting and reviewing policy and/or program documents for review and publication

•           preparing draft reports, briefing papers, speeches, Ministerial Correspondence for review by Executive level employees

•           conducting research and analysis in support of new policy and/or programs

•           providing advice on specialist areas of policy and/or programs

•           liaising with internal and external stakeholders, representing the work area and participating in committees and forums in relation to policy development and/or programs.
 

Our Ideal Candidate:

Our ideal candidate is team-oriented, outcomes focused, self-motivated and resilient. We work individually and as a team and you will need to able to manage multiple projects and prioritise effectively. You will need basic MS Suite skills, have experience with data entry into internal systems and have an eye for detail. 
 

To be successful in the role you will be able to demonstrate the following:

•           strong verbal and written communication skills

•           ability to work successfully as team member and collaborate across program areas

•           experience in managing, coordinating and writing briefs for senior executive and Senate Estimates

•           a good understanding of NIAA systems and processes in particular in relation to financial reporting (e.g. Fusion)

•           a track record of delivering high quality work across multiple tasks demonstrating attention to detail.

Candidates will be assessed at the appropriate work level standard for the level of the position they are applying for (APS5, APS 6) against the following criteria:

•           reviewing, drafting and implementing policy documents

•           providing policy advice within one or more of the following areas: First Nations family safety, ending gender-based violence, justice, child safety

•           stakeholder management skills, with a strong understanding of working in partnership

•           ability to perform in a dynamic environment working with emotionally impactful and/or challenging material

•           a demonstrated record of working in a culturally sensitive manner, with a commitment to furthering cultural intelligence

•           ability to identify emerging opportunities or issues and respond quickly to competing priorities.
