About us
Legal Aid NSW helps people with their legal problems. We can help people with most areas criminal law, family law and every day civil law legal issues. We give legal advice, help at court and do family dispute resolution. We can do this over the telephone or at one of our 28 offices.
 
About the role
We currently have an ongoing role at our Broken Hill office as an Aboriginal Field Officer.
The purpose of the role is to:
  • Ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are informed of their legal options and assist in addressing their unmet legal needs.
  • Assist solicitors and administrative staff to develop, co-ordinate, facilitate and implement outreach services, community legal education sessions and engagement with Aboriginal communities.
  • Assist the Solicitor in Charge, Office Manager and solicitors on local community issues that may arise.
Please Note: Legal Aid NSW considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification under s 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
Applicants for this role must satisfy the Aboriginality criteria. Aboriginality is defined by descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. In the pre-screening questions you will need to provide information on how you satisfy the Aboriginality criteria.

Broken Hill is one of NSW’s most remote cities and the first to be heritage listed. With a population of around 17,000 and servicing a number of local areas Broken Hill is the hub for many smaller local communities. Located approximately 1,114km from Sydney, 500km from Adelaide and 300km from Mildura and serviced by Regional Express Airlines and Qantas, Broken Hill is also only 48km from the South Australian Border. Made famous by immortalisation in a number of Australian films, Broken Hill is renowned for heritage and culture in a remote setting.
The Broken Hill office of Legal Aid NSW services Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Wentworth and surrounding areas. The office has four full time experienced criminal lawyers, two fulltime family lawyers, a full time civil lawyer and a number of administration staff as well as welcoming a range of visiting lawyers from all over NSW delivering local services including Legal Aid specialist services such as Family Law Services for Aboriginal Communities and Civil Law Services for Aboriginal Communities.

The essential requirements for this role
You must:
  • be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • be willing to do a Criminal Record Check
  • have a current Working with Children Check, or be willing to get one before you start work with us
  • have a valid Driver's Licence
At Legal Aid NSW we have a number of roles where it is a statutory obligation for staff to hold a valid Working With Children Check. You will be required to provide your Working With Children Check details prior to commencement in any role requiring the check.

2. Outline your experience co-ordinating, facilitating and implementing outreach services and community education sessions with Aboriginal communities. 
The cover letter must answer the target questions. If you don’t answer the question your application will not be considered.

What happens next 
It will usually take around 2 weeks to review all the applications. We will then invite the shortlisted applicants to come for an interview. Altogether it can take 6-10 weeks to be offered a job.
You may be offered a job that starts straight away or a spot in our Talent Pool, where you can be offered similar roles that become available, without having to reapply.
