Legal Aid NSW helps people with their legal problems. We can help people with most areas criminal law, family law and every day civil law legal issues. We give legal advice, help at court and do family dispute resolution. We can do this over the telephone or at one of our 28 offices.
 
About the role
 
You will provide a high-quality lay advocacy service in veterans’ law and related matters, including providing information about entitlements, assisting with primary claims with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, conducting reviews at the Veterans’ Review Board and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, determining applications for legal aid, providing community legal education and contributing to law reform.
 
About you
 
You will have demonstrated knowledge of the various Acts that apply to veterans’ entitlements and to broader veterans’ law; Have wide experience as an advocate in veterans’ law and related matters, including appearing before the Veterans’ Review Board and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. You will also have broader knowledge of the issues confronting those discharging from the ADF and for veterans.
 
You are self-motivated and comfortable working independently in a legal setting that necessarily involves working in collaboration with lawyers in accordance with client instructions. You will have excellent negotiation skills that allow you to bring people and organisations together to achieve goals that accord with client instructions 
 
We may use this recruitment to create a talent pool for similar ongoing or temporary vacancies we have over the next 18 months.

The essential requirements for this role
 
You must:
 
·       NOT have a degree of Bachelor of Laws, Master of Laws or Doctor of Laws or Bachelor of Legal Studies or being otherwise qualified for admission as a barrister and/or solicitor in any State or Territory of Australia.
·       Have broad knowledge of veterans’ law.
·       Be willing to do a Criminal Record Check and Working with Children Check
·       Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (for ongoing vacancies) or a valid visa to work in Australia (for temporary vacancies)
