Job Requirements:

The First Nations Policy Unit in Fiscal Group is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as an Executive Level 2 (EL2) Director. This vacancy is open only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and is aimed at enhancing representation of First Nations people within our organisation.

Position Requirements

The Director of the First Nations Policy Unit is expected to be able to:

  • Show strong leadership and management skills, by inspiring and motivating the unit to be proactive, innovative, and inclusive, and fostering a work environment that encourages learning and professional growth.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, by fully assessing the implications of relevant policies and proposals, as well as the cultural, social and economic issues facing First Nations communities.
  • Engage and communicate effectively with First Nations people, who participate in all parts of the economy. This means allowing the time to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and respectfully navigating complex issues with a diverse range of parties, who will have their own set of views, priorities and goals.
  • Understand the strategic context of the unit’s work, by identifying policy entry-points and end-points, maximising opportunities, showing good judgement, anticipating issues and appropriately managing risk.
  • Deliver results under pressure whilst being flexible and responsive to change, as part of leading a Treasury policy unit that is relied on for timely and high-quality advice – which influences policymakers and helps shape the implementation of government decisions.

Desirable Qualifications / Experience

  • Candidates who identify as First Nations and have diverse experience and interests are encouraged to apply.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field, including but not limited to economics, law, commerce, finance and/or public policy.
  • Experience in one or more of the following will be particularly well-regarded:
    • Proven experience in government policy analysis, development and implementation, particularly in relation to First Nations issues.
    • Relevant experience in a non-government organisation focused on First Nations affairs (e.g. a not-for-profit and charitable Indigenous corporation).

Eligibility

This vacancy is only open available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait people, as set out in legislation (Section 31 of the Australian Public Service Commissioner’s Directions 2022).

To demonstrate eligibility for employment under this affirmative measure, applicants may be required to provide evidence that they are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, if they are found suitable for engagement. Suitable evidence of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status may include:

  • a letter signed by the Chairperson of an incorporated Indigenous organisation, confirming that the applicant is recognised as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; or
  • confirmation of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent document.

We understand acquiring this can be difficult, and we are committed to ensuring this does not become a barrier for applicants to apply.
