  • Play a key role in advancing assessment and evaluation practices in education both in Australia and globally.
  • Join a team renowned for over 40 years of excellence in research, teaching, and consultancy.
  • Salary packaging, subsidised health and wellbeing services, fitness and cultural clubs, and a 25% discount on graduate courses to our staff and their immediate families!

About the Role
As a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne's Assessment and Evaluation Research Centre (AERC), you will be at the forefront of innovative research. You will contribute significantly to the design and execution of research projects, from developing robust methodologies and securing ethical approvals to collecting and analysing complex data. As a valued member of our collaborative research team, you will have the opportunity to work alongside leading experts while also cultivating your independent research skills. This role offers the ideal platform to publish your findings in top-tier academic outlets and make a tangible impact in the field of education.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking a wide range of mixed method research activities, including collecting and analysing qualitative and quantitative data, reviewing literature, and performing benchmarking tasks.
  • Contributing significantly to the design and analysis of surveys and tests to measure latent constructs.
  • Collaborating with AERC colleagues and working independently as needed, in writing and reviewing major project reports, academic research publications, and briefing materials.
  • Conducting interviews and focus groups, and analysing them using content and thematic analysis techniques.
  • Disseminating research findings to diverse academic and professional audiences.

  • Developing responses to tenders and procurement requests for services related to assessment and/or evaluation research and capacity building.

Who We Are Looking For
You will be a self-driven and adaptable professional, comfortable working autonomously and making independent judgements to guide your own work. With a knack for thinking outside the box and navigating ambiguity, you excel at thinking on your feet and contributing to a dynamic research environment. Your attention to detail ensures accurate data collection and analysis, while your initiative allows you to actively shape the research agenda. You will be adept at problem-solving, particularly in research design, questionnaire development, and data analysis. While you thrive working on your own, you also value collaboration, working seamlessly with colleagues in both the research centre, and across the University.

You will also have:

  • A PhD in the field of Education, Psychology or a related field.
  • A demonstrated history of participating in and contributing to mixed-methods research studies in Education, Psychology or a related field.
  • Proven ability to conduct high-quality qualitative analyses of focus group, interview and other qualitative data using thematic and content analysis techniques, including manual methods, and using qualitative analysis software, e.g., NVivo.
  • Demonstrated competency in conducting quantitative analyses, including survey design and analysis, using software such as SPSS or R.
  • Effective communication skills including experience authoring reports and presenting for non-academic stakeholders, disseminating research findings through academic publications and presentations, and preparing research ethics applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to foster effective working relationships with colleagues and teams to achieve project goals.
  • Ability to work independently and align activities to meet the goals of the project, including strong organisational and time management skills.
