Founded in 1973, CAALAS provides high quality, culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Central Australia. Additionally, the organisation provides community legal education across our 900,000 square kilometre service area and strives to improve social justice outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Central Australia and across Australia.
CAALAS has grown over the years and now has over 40 full-time employees based in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. In addition to providing representation in the Alice Springs and Tennant Creek sittings of various courts, CAALAS lawyers and Aboriginal Legal Support Officers regularly attend bush court sittings and run clinics and workshops in the following communities:

The service is principally funded by the Commonwealth Attorney General's Department and is subject to the Department's policy directions for the delivery of legal aid services to indigenous Australians.
